The Poe Film Festival committee is proud to announce the winner of its Director’s Award, honoring significant achievements in the creative arts in Virginia. Our 2021 honoree is singer-songwriter Dave Matthews, founder of the Dave Matthews Band and philanthropist for many worthy causes in Charlottesville, VA.
As of 2018, the band had sold more than 20 million concert tickets and a combined total of 38 million CDs and DVDs. Their 2018 album, “Come Tomorrow,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making DMB the first band to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at the peak. The band won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “So Much to Say.”
Beyond Mr. Matthews’ many musical contributions, he and the band have volunteered countless hours and huge financial support to needy community programs in the Charlottesville area. The band’s BAMA Works charity has spent more than $8.5 million to address the needs of disadvantaged youth, disabled persons, the environment, and arts and humanities in the Virginia counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and Orange.
Truly a rock legend with a heart for his Virginia roots, Dave Matthews is a worthy selection for the 2021 Director’s Award of the Poe Film Festival. Congratulations to Dave and his awesome band members.
